San Marino Red means it's a 97-98. Hopefully 5-speed.

I think they look naked without the factory lip kit or color-matched sides. But you know, I’m biased and all that.

and judging by the muffler its probably a 1.8t too. Ew.

It’s could be a TDI but I doubt it. The first thing a TDI guy does is delete. The muffler, they just don’t need them. And it’s for sure not a VR6 if it was it would have a wider cut out for the muffler, as all VR6s had twin tip mufflers.

I'm banking on 2.0 with a fart can...those are near-base wheels (15"?). I don't think any 1.8t or VR6 models came with those, but could be wrong on that count. The MkIV models were all over the place.

Those wheels are pretty base-y, could even be a 2 point slow.

Yeah those there the wheels that came on my bro in laws GLS TDI, but was in an accident, and was fixed up by by a shop that has hundreds of mk4 parts cars, which is who he bought it from. So who knows if they were the original wheels,

Very possible they're original...TDI (depending on year) was often pitched as an efficient alternative to — not a premium version of — the base gasser. It was only in later years that TDI started to come with more premium equipment and higher pricing. The earlier 1.9tdi were 90hp/140tq, give or take, and pretty sluggish compared to the newer ones.

I drink Monsters like my life depends on it, but I’d never ever put any stickers or wear any of its clothing, same way I’d never put Denny’s or Dunkin’ Donuts stickers on my car.

I'm more of a Rockstar guy, and I got a big rockstar decal for free at a local battle of the bands. I put it on the underside of my hood for fun. The next day I saw an beige late 90s Camry with no muffler plastered in the three different stickers they were handing out.

Yeah thankfully that can be fixed with a few euro market, and aftermarket parts along with a tune. My bro in law’s is now has about everything you can safely do with changing engine internals and loosing all fuel efficiantcy. He's pushing closer to 180/300 at the wheels now. It's fun, and sounds so mean.

I'm guessing chip, injectors, and exhaust? I used to lurk on tdiclub and it was amazing how much you could do (safely) to those things.

For air

Euro market Seat intake manifold, larger euro market turbo/ exhaust manifold. Still a variable geometry, same as the Oem just a bit bigger, it’s good for 26psi, where as the Oem one peaks at 22 but it won’t last long doing that, it’s really only good for 18 or so. Also an aftermarket more aggressive cam.

after market lager side intercooler, larger all aluminum intercooler piping, polished valves, get delete(prevents soot buildup intake manifold. And yeah 3" stainless exhaust with a Vband clip on clip out high flow cat.

For fuel

A larger in tant pick up piump, an injector pump from a car with an automatic(this one was already done when he bought the car as it was auto when he boutpght it. The auto blew up at 190k and the dealer he brought it from have him a good deal on a manual swap, as its was actually cheaper than replacing the auto) and of coarse bigger injectors.

Handling

He’s also replaced the shifter with a combanation of Audi TT and after market parts, replaced the steering rack with one from a TT, replaced the springs with some aftermarket. GLI springs, I think? They’re stiffer but it retained it ride height. He’s got and upgraded rear sway bar as well. Oh and he just got some OZ Superleggaras and pilot super sports. They are good, very good.

He’s been working on this car for about 4 years now, it’s crazy the transformation it’s taken from a slow, beat up, automatic, old VW to a very fun, but also comfortable car that gets 50mpg on the daily.
